The Challenges of Medical Education in the Era of Complexity

1. Objectives

  • Create a multidisciplinary meeting forum amongst researchers in medical education and performers of the formative processes, to enhance the quality of education.
  • Review the research in medical education to enhance its quality through critical deliberation of itself, favoring the use of refined research methodologies.
  • Identify researchers and research topics in medical education and share experiences between research teams and, given the case, promote the formation of researcher networks in the area.

2. Type of contributions accepted and attributes considered for their evaluation

The Scientific Committee of the VI International Congress of Medical Education will accept papers of qualitative, quantitative, mixed (quali-quanti), or theoretical-conceptual nature, all of which may have one of the following two orientations:

2.1. Research reports (partial or final) which: represent a contribution to the development of knowledge in the educational field: Include the study, questions and objectives, support the methodology used; analyze and discuss the results, specify its theoretical and conceptual references, as well as the sources used.
2.2. Theoretical contributions that integrate knowledge in a reflexive manner, providing new approaches, models, and conceptual frameworks; or discuss analytical categories and research results that allow the orientation of medical education, supported by relevant and updated scientific evidence.

Only papers of high academic quality will be accepted, which will be evaluated by peers considering the following attributes

2.3. The research objective(s) is (are) clearly stated, and answer(s) the research question(s).
2.4. The theoretical and conceptual references that support the proposal, structure an appropriate and pertinent framework of reference, consistent with the research objective.
2.5. . It maintains logical reasoning, argumentative and syntactic conceptual coherence throughout the paper .
2.6. The results are exposed clearly, have been analyzed accordingly, and contrast with objectives and research questions.
2.7. The results, compare and contrast other author’s results, and weight the contribution and limits of their research, exposing new questions for upcoming investigations.
2.8. Introduce an innovative contribution to Medical education field of knowledge.
2.9. Can be used in a practical context, and promotes quality for Medical education in healthcare and educational Institutes.
2.10. Its sources and bibliographical references are updated, relevant, and sufficient. The literary sources and references used are up to date, relevant and adequate.

3. Student papers section

With the intention of motivating and promoting interest for research in medical education in Undergraduate Students and Specialties, a Section of Student Papers is opened for the VI International Congress of Medical Education.

3.1. Contributions will be received from students of medicine and health sciences, oriented to medical education.
3.2. Each student contribution sent must observe and meet the points indicated in this call.
3.3. . In case of submitting free style papers, the autor or whomever registers a contribution through the platform, must specify the paper participates in the Student papers department.

4. Topic areas for the submission of free papers

Each of the papers sent must address only one of the following topic areas:

4.1. Medical Curriculum: Papers focused on improving curricular development, analyzing different types of curricular organizartions, those by asignments, modules or mixed, serial or spiral, emerging and complex models, needs evatuation, curricular alignment, curricualar evaluation and continuos development. Plan studies will not be accepted.
4.2. Basic science education: Analysis of implicit characteristics in each science discipline, training processes, link with clinics, educational technologies, evaluation.
4.3. Clinical formation: clinical learning, service training, skills and abilities development, clinical reasoning and performance, link amongst research, teaching and service.
4.4. Development of professionalism and ethical behavior: bioethics, humanism, values, attitudes development, and multiculturalism.
4.5. Capabilities-oriented education: identification and development of capabilities, linking capabilities with resume, courses aligned to capabilities, development of teachers according to their capabilities, open educational methods focused on capabilities, and capabilities evaluation. 
4.6. Cognitive processes and instructional design for learning: instructional designs, education based in cognitive evidence, learning strategies, development of self-directed learning and meta-cognitive processes, deliberate practice, complex learning, problem-based learning, evidence-based medicine, learning by discovery, service learning, interdisciplinary education, socio-constructivist approaches, and practice communities.
4.7. Undergraduate medical internship and social service: its problems and organization, and the formative processes during these periods.
4.8. Simulation in medical doctors’ education: organization and administration of simulation centers, indications for simulation, use of high fidelity and low fidelity simulators, link between simulation and basic clinical education, partial or full simulation, experience reports and their evaluation.
4.9. Information technologies and telecommunication in medical education: learning management through electronic means, use of synchronic and a-synchronic technologies, telemedicine, experiences and their evaluation, instructional design in media information.
4.10. Learning evaluation: development of validity and reliability tools; formative and summative diagnostic evaluation; setting standards; written proof; performance evaluation; simulation of evaluation; oral exams; portfolios.
4.11. Students as agents of the educational process: Selection of students: admission criteria; admission profiles; motivation; perceptions and expectations; mental health and medical problems; socio-economic conditions; violence and bullying; academic background; academic failure; identification of risky populations and remedial actions; mentoring; student support; post graduate follow-up.
4.12. Faculty as agents of the formative process: recruitment and selection of faculty; faculty development; collegiate work; mental and occupational health of the faculty; motivation and professionalism; teaching strategies; ethical problems in teaching; mentoring; coaching; faculty performance and its evaluation.
4.13. Postgraduate: selection of students; design; operation and evaluation of specialization programs, as well as masters and doctorates.
4.14. Continuous professional development: continuing medical education: strategies; face-to-face and distance education; evaluation and self-evaluation of learning and performance.
4.15. Planning, administration, operation and evaluation, quality and excellence of medical schools and faculties: policies; financing; quality programs and programmatic and institutional accreditation; continuous improvement of quality, excellence in medical education.
4.16. Internationalization of medical education: international medical education and health; academic exchange; establishment of joint programs between different institutions in different countries; double degrees and accreditation, and international certification of medical education.
4.17. Innovation and leadership in medical education: Flexible and adaptive capabilities-based education, development in science of health service provision, education that adds value to health services, innovative use of new technologies, development of adaptive students and life-long education, positive leadership for educational change. Education focused in capabilities, flexible and adaptive, formation towards service delivery in the health sector, innovative use of new technologies, student development towards full adaptation and life-long education, positive leadership for educational change.

5. Modes of presentation of papers

At the moment of registration, the authors will be able to choose the presentation mode from one of the following:

5.1. ORAL PRESENTATION WITH THE PECHAKUCHA TECHNIQUE (based on the projection of 20 slides, each with a duration of 20 seconds, for a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds for each presentation, the file must be in PowerPoint format).
Work Dynamic: Each session will last one hour with four contributions being presented with the PechaKucha technique on the same topic, after which there will be 30 minutes of discussion with the Evaluating Committee.
Under this scheme up to 180 contributions on the PechaKucha format can be received, with priority given to the first ones that requested it. This presentation format has been chosen to favor the widest range of participation within the established time frames.
5.2. ORAL PRESENTATION ACCOMPANIED WITH A POSTER.
Work Dynamic: Presenters will have 6 minutes of exposure, and 3 minutes of questions. Each poster session will last one hour, a team composed by one coordinator and five speakers, will stop at each poster to listen presentations and discuss each Project.

Either case, in order to present a contribution, a favorable opinion from the Academic Committee of the Congress must be received.

6. Reception of papers

In order to facilitate that the attendants process their travel expenses in the Faculties and Schools, a call will be made:

6.1. The reception period for independent papers will be from SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 TO FEBRUARY 28, 2018.
6.2. Las contribuciones recibidas serán evaluadas en el estricto orden que se reciban, se recomienda enviar oportunamente a los autores que requieran gestionar viáticos, el proceso de arbitraje considera un tiempo entre 3 y 4 semanas, una vez recibida la contribución. Submitted contributions, will be evaluated in the strict order as they were received, to those authors that need to process travel expenses, it is recommended to send papers early, please take into consideration it will take 3 to 4 weeks to evaluate contributions.

7. Important dates

7.1. Opening for contributions via email: September 1st 2017.
7.2. Closing date for contributions via email: 28th of February 2018 at 12:00 pm (-6 GMT) 
7.3. Closing date for publishing contributions on AMFEM webpage, from the expert opinion established by the Evaluation Committee for Free style papers: March 21st, 2018Closing date to receive preferential tariff as free style paper authors, will be the 16th of April 2018. After this date, a regular tariff will be applied.
7.4. To be included in the presentation and memoir program, you must have registered and payed the inscription fee by: May 4th, 2018.
7.5. Publish of presentation program, which will establish date, time and place to elaborate your presentation during the Congress: May 11th, 2018
7.6. Closing date to submit oral presentations in PechaKucka style through the platform: May 5th, 2018.

8. Submission process for contributions

The contributions that are sent through the web platform prepared for this, correspond to the whole work , upon characteristics indicated in number 2 Type of contributions ... of this call. Contributions will be sent electronically, the registration mechanics are as follows:

8.1. Whoever registers the contribution (it is widely recommended that he/she isthe main author) must carry out the procedure through the web platform, and must provide the following information of the authors: Full name, contact email, School / Faculty, educational institution.
8.2. The main author will receive a confirmation e-mail for the registration of the contribution, as well as a notice about the evaluation process of the contribution.
8.3. Authors who participate in the contribution. The order in which they are added will be the same in which they will appear in the memoirs.
8.4. Full title of the paper, both in Spanish and English.
8.5. Summary of the independent paper in a maximum of 200 words, both in Spanish and English (abstract)
8.6. Keywords for the independent paper, a minimum of three and a maximum of five, both in Spanish and in English (keywords)
8.7. .Thematic area of the independent paper, each contribution must be registered with a single thematic area.
8.9. Indicate the type of contribution you send: whether it is a student paper or general independent paper.
8.10. Send the document in Word using the independent work format, the document titled Format for the presentation of independent papers, establishes the guidelines, contents and structure that each registered contribution must carry, in case it does not comply with the format, the contribution will be rejected.
8.11. Once the contribution has been registered, a letter of acceptance will be issued in which an identification number will be assigned, this will be used later to follow up of the decision by the Evaluation Committee .
8.12. All contributions will be reviewed by the Academic Committee of the VI International Congress of Medical Education and will be held in arbitration with a minimum of two experts in the field, who may decide to accept or reject the contribution.

9. Referent to the presentation of contributions accepted at the vi international congress of medical education.

In order for the contribution of experts opinion, to be accepted, opinion must be included both in the program of presentations during the VI International Congress of Medical Education, as well as in the electronic reports, and once the first author receives the notification of acceptance, the following must be attended:

9.1. Each contribution with a favorable opinion will be presented during the Congress in the modality chosen during the registration process; THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES OF PRESENTATION MODALITY.
9.2. Each contribution MUST HAVE COVERED THE REGISTRATION FEE TO THE CONGRESS (Registration as Author and fee) AS THE MAIN AUTHOR OR ANY OF THE CONTRIBUTING AUTHORS.
9.3. ONLY THE MAIN OR CONTRIBUTING AUTHORS WILL BE ALLOWED TO PRESENT THE PAPER, the Scientific Committee of the VI International Congress of Medical Education, will request information about, which of the authors will be in charge of giving the presentation during the Congress, said information will be previously verified.
9.4. Registration and enrollment to the Congress IS PERSONAL AND NON TRANSFERABLE TO THIRD PARTIES.

10. Presentation schedule and timetables

Within the framework of the VI International Congress of Medical Education, the presentation of free style educational research will be held at the hotel "El Cid Castilla" in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, from June 12 to 16, 2018 with the following dates and times:

i. Tuesday, June 12 from 15:30 to 18:30hrs.
ii. Wednesday, June 13 from 10:00 to 20:00hrs.
iii. Thursday, June 14 from 10:00 to 20:00hrs.
iv. Friday, June 15 from 10:00 to 15:00hrs.

Those authors who submit contributions in response to this call and who receive a favorable opinion, may be called to present their work within the period mentioned above.

11. Awards and distinctions

Both modes of presentation: oral supported with poster and PechaKucha, will participate in the contest to select the best papers of the Congress. Recognitions will be awarded to the best fifteen papers (three fist places , five honorary mentions, and seven distinctions), the following criteria will be considered to determine the winners:
11.1. Evaluation issued by the Evaluation Committee of the written work sent.
11.2. Evaluation of the oral presentation during the Congress
11.3. In case of a tie, the Scientific Committee may call the candidates selected to an interview to further evaluate their paper.

12. Characteristics of contributions and submission format

12.1. All papers must be submitted in the format for the presentation of free papers, in Word© text processor; said format can be obtained in the following electronic address: Word Format attached
12.2. The name of the attached file must be integrated as follows:

12.2.1. Last name of the main author without accents or capital letters.
12.2.2. Number of the topic area to which its being addressed.
12.2.3. Day and month of submission separated by hyphens.
Example: for a contribution submitted by Pérez for the topic area 12 on the 15th of October.

12.3. Those files with the contribution’s body of work that are sent through the platform and that are not in Word file: *.txt, *.xlm, *.wri, *.log, *.pdf, *.pptx, etc. will be automatically rejected.

13. Papers will not be considered for evaluation if:

13.1. They do not comply with the length and presentation specifications provided for free paper style.
13.2. Contributions will not be accepted if they are:
13.2.1. Mere opinions not founded by scientific evidence.
13.2.2. Proposals for development or formation.
13.2.3. Research papers without results.

14. Any other point not foreseen in this Call for Independent Papers for the VI International Congress of Medical Education: The Challenges of Medical Education in the Era of Complexity will be resolved by the Scientific Committee.

Annex 1. Oral presentation supported with a poster.

1. The poster should be presented with a horizontal orientation and its dimensions must be 90 cm width and 120 cm length.
2. The title in the poster must be al least 2 x 3 cm.
3. Also, the last name and initial of each author must be included, followed by the main author’s e-mail address and the name of the institution.
4. It is advised to include, briefly, the same sections considered in the original paper.
5. During the session of oral presentations supported by poster, a walking tour will take place that visits each poster; this will be coordinator by a moderator of the session.
6. The poster will be mounted by the author himself in the established areas arranged by topic, on the day and time assigned in the presentation program, HAVING TO MOUNT THE POSTER 15 MINUTES IN ADVANCE OF THE PROGRAMMED HOUR. The poster must be taken down at the time assigned in the program.
7. The sessions for oral presentations supported by poster will be organized in groups of 5 in the following manner:

7.1. The moderator will assign at the beginning of the round, 5 presenters.
7.2. He will take attendance and begin the walkthrough poster by poster.
7.3. All presenters must remain in group throughout the tour.

8. Each presenter will have six minutes to present, and three additional minutes to answer questions from the moderator and the visitors (for a total of 9 minutes).

8.1. The papers can only be presented by one of the authors, who must be registered in the Congress and must have paid the enrollment fee.
8.2. Only those papers that are mounted and presented in their corresponding session will obtain a certificate of participation.

9. Posters that are not un-mounted will be discarded to allow the next round of papers to be set up according to the presentation program.

Annex 2. Oral presentations in Pechakucha style

1.1. The PechaKucha technique consists in elaborating a Power Point presentation with a fixed slide identifying the title of the paper and the authors; the presentation per se, consists of 20 slides with an automatic transition set at 20 seconds each, for a total duration of 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
1.2. The Power Point presentation template will be provided by the Scientific Committee and will be available for download on the website; no modifications to this template will be accepted.
1.3. It is the responsibility of the presenter, to verify the time and location established in the program, and arrive 10 minutes before the stated time, as well as to identify himself or herself with the congress ID to the moderator of the session. Whoever does not present themselves with the coordinator of the session or identify with 10 minutes in advance of the stated time will lose the right to present their paper.
1.4. The sessions will take place in the following manner:

1.4.1. The presentations will be loaded in advance on the computer of the corresponding room.
1.4.2. The coordinator of the session will summon each of the presenters who have been identified and begin with the corresponding PechaKucha presentation; the presenters cannot exceed the established 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
1.4.3. Once the four presentations programmed for each session have been exposed, a question and answer period will be open for 25 minutes.
1.4.4. The presenters must remain throughout the whole session to have the right to a certificate of participation for the paper presented.
